For my money the late, great Roy Acuff was one of the finest ever voices in mainstream country music - and his stunning version of "Wreck On The Highway" has long been one of my all time favourite records. Now, with the reissue of these two Hickory albums from the early '60s we've got a chance to hear that hauntingly plaintive mountain style recorded in its prime. CR readers will probably be most interested in the 'Hand-Clapping Gospel Songs' album and what a gem it is. Listen to what Roy and his Smoky Mountain Boys do to "I See The Light", the Hank Williams rewrite of Arthur Brumley's "I See The Light". Or get your foot tapping to the lads' rendition of Odell McLeod's "That Glory Bound Train". Or get church happy to this impeccable version of the Bailes brothers' "Travelling The Highway Home". If the 12 gems of country gospel weren't enough there's also a visit to 'Sings American Folk Songs' where Roy delivers plaintive renditions of "The Letter Edged In Black", "The House Of The Rising Son", "Little Rosewood Casket" and nine more. With informative sleevenotes this is a fine example of America's rich cultural heritage.
