Comparisons between Edmund Rubbra and John Tavener are easy: both are prolific English composers of contemporary sacred music, often of a demanding nature. The contrasts? Tavener has the large audience his music deserves and Rubbra has not, which is curious as Rubbra worked within the Anglo-Catholic tradition while Tavener owes more to Orthodoxy, which is "alien" for many Western ears. If you enjoy Tavener you might appreciate Rubbra too. This recording is a good place to start The vocal performance by Voces Sacrae is superb and the selection covers Rubbra's work in choral music from "Five Motets" (1934) through to a "Mass In Honour Of St Teresa Of Avila" (1981).
