Sam Dees is one of those unheralded singer/songwriters that the USA soul music scene has in abundance.  His recorded output compared to other, better known, names is small, but others have used his material with some success, Whitney Houston, Ben E King and Millie Jackson are just some who’ve benefited from Sam’s expertise.  This album is soul music with a large dollop of social comment, with none of the gospel content that characterised his ‘Gospel Tribute’ album released in ’97.  All 22 tracks on this CD have never been issued before, and soul enthusiasts, of which I am one, will have much to enjoy – the title track, with its starkly simple arrangement, is a personal reflection on slavery and its aftermath is a highlight.  Despite the absence of Christian content, this is another worthy slice of unique musical history from Ace’s vast back catalogue.
