In recent times Lanny Cordola has abandoned the rock of his youth to explore jazz guitar and on his latest project he has taken a selection of talented friends, a selection of blues flavoured songs and gone for the late night cool jazz approach and boy does it work! If you're fed up with these sanitised Christian jazz albums a la Brentwood, this is the real thing. Acoustic in flavour, taking in a bit of dixie in places and an awful lot of blues, this concentrates on the late night shivers down your spine feel good factor. As well as Cordola's fluid guitar, this whole project is topped off by the sheer vocal talent of one Sandra Stephens. Whether she's doing a sultry version of Billie Holiday's "God Bless The Child" or a storming version of Mahalia Jackson's "Just A Closer Walk With Thee", Stephens seems unperturbed by her predecessor's reputations and carves out a nice niche for herself. Perfect late night music and if there was a late night club in Birmingham where they could play this sort of stuff, I'd be on the front row.
