Although this three piece outfit have been around since 2008, releasing a couple of EPs, this is the first full length album by the East Midlands-based hard rockers. Described as "an 'old school heavy metal' interpretation of the Nicene Creed", this album does not hide its influences of Iron Maiden, Rush and Magnum. After a couple of intro instrumentals it launches headlong into some solid heavy rock. The material is well played and features some strong lead guitar, such as the atmospheric "Accordance And Ascension". I particularly enjoyed the memorable choruses of tracks like "Harder Than Hard" that have a punchy rhythm. The majority of the cuts are, however, standard fare with a few progressive moments. The lyrics are clear and thought-provoking with "Of One Being" being one of the strongest in its exploration of the Trinity. On the weaker side, my listening was often distracted by the overall mix with the drums sounding flat and muffled, probably a result of a limited budget. Also, a few tweaks to the vocals would have improved them. Having said that, Shadow Of Acolyte have managed to put together a collection of original material which will appeal to fans of traditional metal.
