'Tel Aviv' is not about the city, but the meaning of those words: "Tell of spring". This one-track CD (in six interconnected movements) kicks off sounding very much like John Lennon circa 1974, with lots of space and echo. It ramps up from there as the themes move from the bare branches of disappointment through to new shoots of hope. It's very well played but does come across more as six songs blended into one another (a la Moody Blues) that a progressive whole (as Mike Oldfield would do). The move towards hope doesn't just up the tempo, though, but manages to be uplifting and reflective at the same time (Movement 4). The vocal moves between the previously mentioned Lennon, Bono and Martin Smith (especially Movement 6). The use of space and echo is very atmospheric and reminded me of so many things (including Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Radiohead) but they're so well segued that it's really his own sound. I was impressed by the way it felt like it should have been acoustic guitars, yet the electrics were so much better. Probably the best thing I can say is that as soon as it finished I played it again immediately. The best movement is number three with its Graham Coxon-esque guitar work. And 'Tel Aviv' being a free download - what's not to like?
