For quite a while now, bands like Explosions in the Sky, Caspian and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, amongst others, have been playing instrumental post-rock to critical acclaim, a devoted fanbase, and many opportunities for soundtrack spots in film and television. Now, Dreamt Music, a subsidiary of Facedown Records, presents the Christian public with Shapes Stars Make, from Dallas; a mostly-instrumental three piece. On 'These Mountain Are Safe' they create something seldom heard on a debut album, music which at once sounds original yet familiar, intense yet listenable. Each of the nine tracks on offer build from relatively restrained beginnings to strident climaxes, built on sinuous guitars, probing bass lines and inventive rhythmic work from drummer Zach Edwards. From opening track "Giant Bird" all the way through to closer "And the Sky Opened" this album is a veritable feast of barely-controlled volume and layered intensity. One to seek out.
