Those of you with a growing batch of CDs and cassettes at the end of your album rack for the famed “Experience’ samplers will already have heard a little of this Scottish team. Their ‘The Covenant’ EP had a certain something. But never in my wildest dreams did I expect the quantum leap this team demonstrate on this, their first ‘proper’ album. ‘Mercy And Justice’ is superbly produced by Graeme Duffin (presumably related to the band’s drummer Stuart Duffin), the band’s lead singer Stewart Moffat has a fine voice, at times bright and bluesy then huskily tender, while the pop rack arrangements set off this set of bold, Christ-centred songs with inventive dexterity. One of the best British independent releases we’ll hear for many a year.
