This is the first offering from vocal trio Soul & Spirit who have been together for around four years. Hailing from Moseley Rd Methodist Church in Birmingham, Carol Troupe, Joanne Smith and Sam Wilkinson weigh in with a debut album. Without any record company money to throw at the recording process, they should be proud of this self-titled collection. The songs are mostly penned by Sam Wilkinson who may well become a name to watch for. Stylistically, this CD is a bit of a mixed bag which is both it's appeal and it's downfall. For me, I couldn't quite find a level with the songs as they wandered from close harmony accapella to an early '90s sounding soul/R&B/gospel mix that slid haplessly into a piano driven hymn styled ballad. However, it does mean that you aren't going to have too much trouble finding something pleasing on this album (within a loose gospel heading of course...). With a little more studio experience and a focused production team I could see this trio making a name for themselves.
