Well, Dave Lynch, I salute you! The engineer/producer has finally wrenched the Spring Harvest teenage praise series into today and banished forever those embarrassing memories where grunge or dance elements were clumsily grafted onto Big Tent Celebration praise. No, this is truly alternative, truly l997, so that even though the worship warhorses (Kendrick, Richards, Doerksen) have songs here they've been utterly reassembled by the clever Mr Lynch. Vocals range from a spoken monotone on Brian Doerksen's "More Than Oxygen" to Split Level's Adrian Thompson singing with laid back bluesiness on Noel Richards' "Are We The People". The sounds take in elements of indie rock, dance, ambient and even a hint of drum and bass while still retaining a coherent stylistic shape. My current favourites are Samantha Rigg who breathes soul into Kendrick's "Hear Our Cry" over an eery programmed groove and the concept intro title track. Royalties from the album will go to help children in Guatemala, so there's one more reason to lock into an album which puts worship firmly into youth culture.
