When did Welsh coal pit ponies stop work? Answer, during the Welsh Revival of 1904. It is said that they were so used to hearing commands uttered in profanities that they did not understand orders given with clean, kind words by newly converted miners. Better known facts about that historic move of God are that society was changed, a nation became God-fearing and families were impacted for generations to come. An event that is well worth researching to note spiritual principles that could benefit Christians today. What hymns were being sung in 1904? That question is answered on this centenary edition CD, recorded in Coventry Cathedral by the Saint Michael's Singers. Hymns no longer play a role in my weekly worship, so not hearing them for so long may be why I became quite emotional at hearing familiar songs from childhood days. It is fitting that the album's first track "Here Is Love Vast As The Ocean" is sung in the Welsh language. The organ supported by trumpets create an authentic atmosphere that leave the need of little imagination to be transported back to the valleys. The 12 tracks, including my favourites "Jesus Lover Of My Soul" and "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling", all are performed with a simple sensitivity by the singers enhanced by soprano Bethany Rowell. As for 2005, "Speak, I Pray Thee" would be a good prayer.
