For those of you who are unfamiliar with power prog (power and/or progressive metal), it is amongst the most demanding kind of rock music, fusing the technicality and musical depth of progressive rock with the pace and passion of heavy metal. In short, there are few bands around to have produced remarkable albums in the genre, fewer still in the CCM industry. So, well done to the veteran metal band from Warwickshire, for executing the tracks here with such dexterity. The lead guitar work of Pete Jennens is nothing short of breathtaking. Unfortunately the vocals aren't in the same class. While Graeme Leslie lacks vocal ability, his songwriting skills are exemplary and the CD is otherwise a hit from the first bar onwards. All round musicianship and pace tie in with catchy hooks which almost rescue the album from its vocal shortcomings. The songs themselves are good, and would be incredible with wailing, impassioned vocals. "Cantabile", an entirely instrumental and thumping good track reminiscent of the hair bands of the '80s, provides a welcome relief and a glimpse into the almost genius of this album. If you want to hear one of the best guitarists in the UK Christian scene, this album is worth having a listen to. But most will prefer to wait for Stairway to get a more capable singer.
