Eclecticism rules in the musical world of Stuart Menzies Farrant. This talented Brit is able to handle blues rock (“Revival”), funky retro-R&B (“Deep Calls To Deep”) and lilting jangly guitar pop. It’s the latter on the skipping mid-tempo “Make Me Blind” which got to me first play through. The dance-cum-R&B groove of “Take Me Deeper” and the floating ballad “More Than A Prayer”, complete with delicate harmonics and woozy sax, both have their moments. Such a wide variety of styles and sounds may not be to everyone’s taste but the sheer musicianship displayed on these carefully crafted tracks is a plus as are lyrics of faith and devotion which never try and get too clever and stay close to Scripture. Overall ‘Revival’ is an impressive demonstration of what can be achieved by an independent artist if he has the talent and patience.
