Look at the picture on the front of the CD and you might think, 'She looks a little like Sharleen Spiteri.' Listen to the first track, "You Rescued Me", and your next thought might be, 'She has vocal similarities to Chrissie Hynde.' Those two reference points won't serve you too badly in pinpointing Sue Peters' music. Granted, there isn't the soul-lite of later Spiteri/Texas, nor is there the aggressive edge found in the Pretenders, but this is high quality guitar-driven female pop-rock with worshipful lyrics. One element that distinguishes it from most of the praise CDs reviewed in Cross Rhythms, though, is the Catholic content. One track is entitled "Parce Domine", the lyrics of the title track could have been inspired by the teaching of the late Dutch Catholic priest Henri Nouwen and "Sanctify Us" implores, 'Send us your angels, send us your saints'. But maybe that isn't surprising for a woman who weekly leads a Teen Mass in her home church with over 1200 attendees. So although this evangelical reviewer would differ theologically with Sue on some points, I still welcome this as a breath of fresh air in the crowded worship CD market.
