Bawa, from Minna, Nigeria, seems to have long had a musical release brimming inside of him; he's sung at weddings from the age of 10 and has been involved with both Nigerian Television Authority Rising Star, and Idols West Africa. While his debut 'My Super Story' may be a realisation of a long anticipated ambition, its force is underwhelming. It's a well-mannered record that manages to pull out the odd track that could plausibly get some radio circulation (the opener 'There's A Way' being the best example, with its chanting "Just like that!" chorus). But there's little to excite the listener into thinking that what's before them is any more than a standard R&B/hip-hop release. Bawa himself is certainly a talented singer, well-suited to his chosen genre, but he stays comfortably within the overused vocoded style, which in fact hides Sunday's vocal ability. The musical arrangement too feel flat and could have benefited from a warmer sound in the production process. Without forgetting the above, Bawa hasn't made any enormous trip-ups on this release, rather he just ought to have run further with it. Let's hope the young artist can produce more spark next time.
