For a CD starting with a quiet, introspective beginning, I first labelled this Australian band as alternative/emo rock. The sometimes quietly passionate vocals (which deceived me in the first minute) served to draw me in before building into a hardcore scream. As the first track “If This Pen Would Only Work I’d Tell You” came to a close, hard breathing resonated. There is plenty of rawness on the self-produced ‘Self Portraits Of True Escape’, which doesn’t distract, but rather adds. “When The Bough Breaks” starts with an interesting dissonance between distorted guitars, but drags on into an otherwise ordinary hard rock track. But then… oh! Is that more screaming? This should have come sooner. What makes SuperMarket Hero a band worth listening to is the quiet introspection that builds into the scream that is inside all of us. This four song CD gives me a taste of a band that Christian alternative legend Plankeye might sound like if they could scream. The lyrically simple “Wanting You” is the sonic gem of this EP, with a soundscape of overlaying guitar, electronic sampling and haunting vocals. This song shows what I think the band is best at: the prolonged, emotive jam.
