Arhoolie Records specialise in releasing American roots music - gospel, country, Cajun, folk, etc, and occasionally they unearth something of historic value. Thus the legendary Carter Family are here featured in radio recordings made in 1939. Considering the place that the Carter Family have occupied in the history of country music in the USA, these recordings have a place in seeing how the family developed their music. Complete with radio announcer Brother Bill Guild's introductions, the songs are shared between the whole family and also some solo spots from the Carter sisters. Long term fans will find it fascinating to hear a 10 year old June Carter soloing showing the talent which would later bloom to make her one of the biggest country stars of her generation! The material is mostly downhome with the minimum of backing - just guitars and autoharp. Recorded straight onto acetate ready for broadcast, the sound quality is obviously rather ropey! However the rediscovery of these discs brings a piece of history to life and is fascinating because of the Carters' country dynasty.
