This is a collection of 15th century church music sung by a collection of scholars from Oxford and Cambridge and dominated by the work of Ockeghem. Little is known about the composer other than his music which is characterised by a breadth and depth and a serenity that his contemporaries never quite managed to match. It is contrasted with the heavier "Salve Regina" of Obrecht and the moving lamentation of Josquin des Prez on the death of Ockhghem which acts as a fitting contemporary accolade to a great composer. The Clerks' Group offer a quality performance, well balanced and with a breadth of feeling that gives the recording some welly and make it a good listen by anybody's standard.
