The 18th century Methodist revival was significant in the history of Christian music in that it was a classic example of revival being accompanied by an abundance of new music expressing new truths. In all, Charles Wesley wrote around 6,500 hymn lyrics (anybody and everybody penned the tunes!) so it's no surprise with such a rich seam to mine that Kingsway revisit Charles Wesley for a second helping of fine hymns here recorded by Christopher Norton in the significant surroundings of Coventry Cathedral. Poetry and theology meet in these wonderful hymns which still have a great deal to say to late 20th century believers. David Poulter's organ and the St Michael's singers capture the intricate beauty of "O Thou Who Camest From Above" or the majesty of "Soldier Of Christ Arise" as well as the splendid celebratory joy of "Christ The Lord Is Risen Today". The packaging is excellent with full lyrics and informative biographical details of the life of the Wesleys as well as the writing of the hymns.
