It has to be said that the best things about this series are the CD booklets. Exemplary pieces of research, each booklet is a fascinating read. So far the series has brought us Isaac Watts, John Newton, William Cowper, James Montgomery and Charles Wesley. Now the most recent of the Hymn Makers, the blind Fanny Crosby who only died in 1915, is lovingly documented. Her story is truly moving. But what of the renditions here? Producer Chris Norton puts those popular Sheffield Salvationists The Celebration Choir through their paces and the renditions are adequate, though no more, while the boomy recording makes the lyrics indistinct.
