Another boxed set marathon of English hymnody, featuring John Newton and William Cowper - "Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken", "Amazing Grace", "O For A Closer Walk", etc; Charles Wesley - "Christ The Lord Is Risen Today", "Ye Servants Of God", "O Thou Who Camest From Above", etc; and a disk of Salvation Army specialities from Herbert Booth and Albert W T Osborn. You get three CDs of harmony singing with a truly comprehensive and informative booklet detailing background and biographies as well as providing the lyrics. The hymns here are well sung and played by people for whom they have meaning. The Hymn Makers series must build up into a comprehensive collection of well loved hymns from the English church traditions. There are lots of familiar and favourite hymns on Discs 1 and 2 while the Salvation Army offerings were all new to me. Yes, they feature brass bands as well as Songsters from the Bristol area.
