As The Movies Ceili Band this 13-piece have gigged around and now weigh in with this intriguing album. The title track opens in a delicious blend of old and new, a joyous jig rhythm and surreal images about an encounter with someone sleeping in the gutter, the banality of our modern life, and the stars coming out in Callord all held together with the plaintive query, "Do you think we're all connected?" If that wasn't sufficient, the song then segues into traditional reels, "The Earl's Chair". Nothing else on the album quite reaches this high point but there's still a lilting Irish ballad with a vocal from Mike Sands and more memorable images ("So you met her last week/At a boot sale in Chingford") and "The Hills Of Zanzibar" complete with a merry fiddle. The spiritual messages are there too with "La La La" going into the Latin mass. I've a bit of a problem with a lyric that goes "And Christ said that he was not good at all/But just the bearer of the gifts you give" but maybe that's me failing lo grasp the concept. If you're looking for a band that put folk music into a contemporary selling with considerable wit and imagination this one's for you.
