The Mox Files is the nom-du-disc of singer/songwriter/guitarist Andrew Moxon who, hugely assisted by producer Tony 'The Psalmist' Silcock, has come up with one of the freshest sounding and most inventive albums to hit the British scene for years. Using eerily satisfying layers of synth and guitar riffs, phat and funky drum loops and a set of songs which punch home their spiritual themes with unrelenting passion the effect is completely uplifting. "Ambient worship," was how one friend described this; "new wave rock" volunteered a second and "a dance-tinged singer/songwriter" a third, so it's pretty clear that this transcends the usual pigeonholes. At times, slightly reminiscent of a Psalmistry or a more avant garde Matt Redman, it never let's up creating dazzling soundscapes of layered rhythm while Andrew's voice is huskily effective despite its limitations. Another small gripe is that maybe the Psalmist overdoes the digital delay on the vocals on some tracks. But this is still groundbreaking stuff deserving of the widest support.
