A ska album. Ska? That word rings a bell. Check date. 1995. Check origin. California (the OC = Orange County). Check again. Yep. Californ-i-a. At last, something we're 10 years ahead of the USA on! The excellent booklet has lots of in-concert 'pics' so I was slightly disappointed to discover this was a studio recording, albeit a very energetic one. Live I reckon this band would go into overdrive and then some. Most of the tracks are the usual ska formula- upbeat fast reggae, hard working brass section, guitar all upstrokes on the off beat. Not as catchy, clever or varied as, say, Madness or The Specials, but for the most part well played, great fun and a pretty authentic British sound, circa early/mid 80s. The lyrics are fairly straightforward evangelistic stuff which suggests where these guys do most of their playing and how they see their ministry: not stroking the Saints, but taking the Good News out to the people. Go for it Supertones!
