I blame The Beatles myself. Wasn't it them who first inspired orchestras and string quartets to perform instrumental versions of their works? If you remember those wince-inducing classical rock albums from the '80s where very respectable orchestras prostituted themselves with overblown versions of Queen songs and the like you might have an idea of what this is like. Actually, it's not that bad because it's a little subtler. I discovered the album on the internet and only bought it because I was curious that someone should think of doing string quartet versions of Switchfoot songs! Weird eh? And yes, it is a little strange hearing songs like "Meant To Live" and "Chem 6a" of all things transformed in this way. But then it's so weird that I have to confess I love it! The arrangements stay true to the original versions so that it's fun comparing them to what you know already. "Dare You To Move" sounds particularly stunning and my only disappointment is that there are no versions of "Gone" or perhaps "Adding To The Noise" would have been suitably appropriate. One for those with left field tastes to search out.
