'Standing On The Edge Of Time' is a record essentially founded on good ol' fashioned rock 'n' roll. In suitable form, the punchier songs ("Lord's Train", "Gabriel") are fleshed out with chunky guitar riffs and licks and the ballads are not long in duration before they yield to more bombastic passages: fairly standard stuff. Despite this, The Sunday Threads are not overall so straight forward and simple. Amongst the radio friendly pop rock is a prevalent, rather Southern American, retro country feel, (noticeable especially in the keyboard tone throughout). Terry Josephson's vocals testify to this, strongly accented and gritty enough to feel at home in this stylistic surrounding. It's a distinctive feature that is most successfully materialised during the record's more subdued, reflective moments, particularly in the standout "A Family Song" which laments the tragedy of broken marriages and families. Other highlights include the almost symphonic "Without Wings" and the lyrically political "Heaven's Call". In all likelihood however, the sound The Sunday Threads have developed with 'Standing On The Edge Of Time' will not grant them mass appeal this side of the pond. Though to anyone with accommodating ears, do not dismiss the record these Californian rockers have been waiting a long time to produce.
