This is the debut album from a Chicago-based jazz-tinged gospel diva who has been singing from the age of 11. Although Tina always loved gospel music she found herself drawn to other styles, jazz and neo-soul in particular, and now describes her music as "inspirational soul". This collection of songs has been in development for 12 years. . . hence the title. It was certainly worth the wait. There is a dominant jazz soul sound coupled with uplifting and encouraging lyrics providing a real feel-good vibe. The CD kicks off with the beautifully smooth "Don't Give Up", based on Galatians 6:9, reminiscent of the British R&B band Loose Ends with its grooving bass line, chilled Rhodes and brass. The summery "Set You Free" takes us into Latin rhythm and Joe Sample-style piano as Tina remembers when the truth of the Bible set her free. Other highlights are the funky "It Comes From You" with clear Incognito-style references, and "Fruit Of The Spirit" with its mellow Rhodes and flugelhorn as an aide-memoire for Galatians 5:22-23. The ballads like "Suddenly" stay more within the confines of church-based gospel but are equally emotive and uplifting. Solid performances of God-honouring songs coupled with excellent production; a fitting testament to 12 years of work. I'm not sure there's currently anyone else doing Christian music quite like this.
