Topaz was a joint venture between husband and wife Adam and Nicola Carpenter. Adam now goes under his own name as a solo act (I saw him at this year's Greenbelt), with Nicola providing occasional backing vocals. "Rocks And Stones" kicks this CD off with a Dylanesque feel including a harmonica intro. But where Dylan is raspy and upbeat, Carpenter has a gentle bluesy voice. Pure, innocent and slow-paced sets the style. However this, like some of the other offerings, is at least a minute too long. Nicola offers some nice lilts when she provides lead vocals, but nothing particularly original. On "Open My Eyes" the joint vocals are echoed to great effect, leaving a haunting and touching atmosphere. This is undoubtedly one of the highlights of 'Undershotover'. Adam's self-penned songs are delivered with feeling, the honesty and raw emotion endearing and utterly believable. The home-grown folk feel is a distant cry from popular tastes, but it creates a warm feel and the lyrics are emotionally accessible unlike some of the vague lyricists often heralded for their artistry nowadays. "Flying Song" contains nicely plucked guitar sounds with a great mandolin piece to accompany the chorus. The arrangements are thoughtful on a record that is calm and mellow. The well-crafted songs, thoughtful arrangements and sweet melodies make it a relaxing and enjoyable record.
