In case you're not yet hip to the ways and traditions of black gospel choirs, let me explain that the chap who gets top billing on a choir isn't necessarily the lead singer. He may not sing at all being the choir's director, composer of the songs or even pastor of the church from whence the choir sprang. (It'd be interesting to know how they share out the record royalties...but I digress). Tyrone doesn't compose or sing but directs his combined Chicago choirs. Clever ol' Word Inc fall back on another long standing gospel tradition and get a gospel big name to "present" the package (James Cleveland presented dozens of LPs during his lifetime) though I can't hear the gruff voiced Rev Brunson contributing much. No matter, this is a well above average choir album. The songs, largely written by Tony Dyson are above the average; though cover the standard lyrical exhortations of a thousand other choir albums while the rhythm and brass sections are superb. Ace keyboards man Jerry Peters even gets to do a hot solo on one track. The lead vocalists are also above average with plenty of pyrotechnics to upset the congregation though it's the joyful, stomping, unison "We've Got A Right" which clicked best with me.
