Years back I was particularly partial to a grassroots Scottish band called December. So it was considerable interest when I espied on the sleeve of this five-song EP by a Lanarkshire-based band the names Scott and Aileen Pattison, who were the mainstays of December. So what do Union State sound like? The style is still guitar-driven and with their worship focus occasionally brings to mind David Crowder and Chris Tomlin. But there are also some glimpses of Snow Patrol in the radio friendly hooks. The songs, particularly the six minutes plus title track opener are good, but what really sets this apart from most of the tidal wave of contemporary worship releases is Aileen's goosebump-inducing voice. Expect to hear this on Cross Rhythms radio before too long.
