In 2000 BBC TV spent an hour unpacking the birth of this mainstream pop group. Despite that they lasted a mere microsecond and this long deleted single is their only legacy. The 10-member United Colours Of Sound, with a cultural mix of the UK, Caribbean, USA, China, Ireland and Sweden, were originally conceived by Carrie and David Grant and many of the group members cut their teeth singing on mainstream sessions adding gospel choir style vocals to projects by the likes of Mariah Carey, Diana Ross, Boyzone, Spice Girls and Elton John. There is no doubt that they had the vocal chops to make it. This was no faceless backing group but rather a melding of many musical personalities into something powerful and special. Their single was a cover version of U2's "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" which at the time seemed the perfect choice - familiar and spiritual and yet given a fresh makeover, mixing R&B and pop with a smattering of gospel passion. Shame it flopped.
