The thriving hip-hop independent Syntax Records go from strength to strength and this, the latest in their Night Owls series, features a welter of well known artists (LA Symphony, Braille, Red Cloud featuring Pigeon John, Luke Geraty, Freddie Bruno) with plenty of lesser known acts like Def Shepard, NoVA Infinite, Kaboose, MaxOne and the wonderfully named Spoken Nerd. Funky and fresh, moody and mellow, 'Night Owls 3' is packed with great music! Tuneful samples have been beautifully mixed with quality rapping. It is a perfect combination of DJ and rhythmic rhymes. I noticed many of the tracks make reference to Syntax Records, but this is subtly blended into the music. I suppose in the days of downloads, this is the way record companies mark their music. Some of the tracks are very chilled and relaxing. The sampling again is a work of art. They create an atmosphere and soundscape that can almost be visualised. Other tracks are loaded with attitude and energy making you wish you knew how to breakdance!
