The Why We Worship series from Vineyard lakes a specific theme and explores it with carefully chosen material. Here, worship leaders Brian Doerksen, Scott Underwood and Brent Helming present 12 gentle acoustic songs on the theme of intimacy with God. Straight forward arrangements and acoustic approaches create an intimate sound that only serves to underline the intimacy of the material. This is a mix of old and new songs but all of it is intimate worship. The hoary classic "How I Love Jesus" is given a fresh interpretation and it works! Scott Underwood's "Lord I Love You" is another favourile which proves that some of the best songs are the simplest. Really, these are songs that are best sung in a concert for one - just you and Jesus! So slap it in the car stereo, turn the volume up high, sing along and don't worry about that couple in the car next to you at the traffic lights who are giving you strange looks. Jesus is enjoying it!

The whole style of this article stands in sharp contrast to the gentle deeply worshipful "Intimacy" he is reviewing. Most of what he says I would agree with, yet... Why We Worship is for those who are ready, longing to worship. For us there is no need for cheerleading, or to be reminded of the next few words in the song, exhorted to praise, or entertained with comples arrangements or harmonies. I love these songs. Lately I have needed to look at myself and decide what is essential - what am I compelled to pray "LORD, don't let this happen to me." At first I had a list. Now there is only one thing, and I sing my commitment each time I hear "Go On Loving You."
These songs are adoration, prayer, surrender.
