I'm always a bit dubious when I get a demo from a new band with an accompanying letter which tells me that they compose all their material under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes this proves to be true, at least judging by the quality and allowing for the fact that they Holy Spirit is probably a well talented musician, but on other occasions this sort of statement can prove to be nothing more than a half-hearted attempt to cover up poorly written and poorly played material under the guise of spiritual inspiration. Gripe over. Happily this three song cassette falls into the first category and I was pleasantly surprised, if not astonished, by the quality of musicianship to be found here. I can't comment on the lyrics because there aren't any! Walking On Water play fast and funky instrumental contemporary jazz more infectious than influenza in autumn. Solid percussion and some wicked bass from Faron Woodbridge hold down the beats for freely expressive improvisation from the three horn players. It's Weather Report, it's Koinonia, it's Starsky And Hutch, Groove Factor Nine. The outstanding track is "Driver Driver" with it's angry, impatient, traffic jam horn stabs contradicting the spirit of peace and goodwill at Christmastime. A full album is due in a few months, meanwhile buy this!
