This is a collection of 23 hymns following the church calendar from Advent (“Hills Of The North, Rejoice” and “On Jordan's Bank”) through to All Saints (“Palms Of Glory, Raiment Bright” and “For All The Saints”). The Choir of Wells Cathedral, directed by Malcolm Archer, sound superb and Rupert Gough on organ adds some lovely touches. The booklet notes are interesting and include all the words. I expect that most listeners will recognise many of the hymns on offer and that for most there will be some surprises. The Christmas hymns illustrate this. One is “Of The Father's Heart Begotten” by Prudentius (born 348) to the tune “Divinum Mysterium” (1582). The other is “O Little Town Of Bethlehem” to the tune “Christmas Carol” and not the usual folk arrangement by Vaughan Williams. There is nothing in this collection that is not worth hearing and much to treasure.
