White Chocolate are an American multi-racial band who appear to be kicking up something of a storm in the USA having received rave reviews from such well known artists as John P Kee and Kirk Franklin. Their music is an unashamed throwback to the R&B/funk/disco sound of the late '70s and early '80s and the name that kept coming to my mind as I listened was the Average White Band. All the essential sounds of the era are there - punchy horns, tight rhythms, soulful singing and an overarching kitsch sense of humour (hence song titles like "Jesus Is My DJ"). Yet despite this the band manage to pack in some surprisingly up front lyrics that don't pull any punches. Whether you remember the era from first time round or just like dressing up in silly outfits and dancing the night away to old records this is an album that you'll love - only don't take it too seriously.
