Skittles the church mouse introduces the songs on disc one, aimed at children aged two to three. The mouse sings in a high register without sounding irritatingly squeaky - as mice can tend to. Nice opening song about the fruit of the Spirit, interesting descending melody not unlike a song from Mary Poppins. Inspiration has gone in to these songs; some children's songs tend to be gobbledegook-based, as in nonsense poetry, which can of course be entertaining and fun. But these songs have crafted verbatim Scripture verses into the melody, which makes the task of writing them all the more harder. Occasionally the writer, children's author Stephen Elkins, takes an inspirational break and relies on traditional nursery rhyme melodies, which could be a mistake; very young children may find this confusing: is it "Three Blind Mice" or "Saved By Grace"? Disc two moves up an age and is aimed at ages four to five. "Building Others Up" has a great message and some engaging accents with repeats for children to hook on to. In this age group there is some extra wording that's not Scripture, but there is still plenty of Scripture to listen to. Peer pressure is tackled in "What Pleases The Lord" and may be a little too enterprising for five year old children to be bothered with but maybe this is a good opportunity for parents to explain what peer pressure is; forewarned is to be forearmed. The music and chord structures are also taken to a new pleasing level. The third and last disc is for ages five to seven, the Wonder Kids sing very nicely, stay in tune and have an appealing alto quality to them. This CD is meant to be played a few tracks at a time; some are good for bed time, others for waking up or lunch time or played in the car, etc. . . I can see how they could be useful to families for several years. I liked the themes for the songs, there's good teaching on humility, being joyful in the Lord, and walking in love.
