When concluding my review of 'Atonement', their second album, I suggested that Your Memorial was a band willing to try and broaden their sound and appeal. They've done just that on 'Redirect'. It opens with an ambient synth and the overlaid voice of a preacher. "Transfiguration" is the first of several instrumentals that break up the relentless driving guitars that you expect from one of Christian music's heaviest bands. The Minnesota-based group produce a blend that is rhythmical but also brutal and jarring. On 'Redirect' they show that they are just as at home pounding through passages of standard metalcore as they are revealing vulnerability in more open sections featuring clean vocals and intricate guitar work. On occasions, the album becomes a melting pot of many styles and the production is a step up from their previous outing giving the guitars much more definition and energy though some of the quieter passages sound a tad out of place. Your Memorial are certainly a band who continue to grow and develop without leaving behind fans of crunching, ear splitting metal.
