Comment: I first met Peter Lewis in the early 1960s when our curate sent the young Sunday School teachers to a Sunday School Teachers Conference in the heart of Manchester. The Liverpool Raiders played - amazing. Afterwards, I asked Peter for his contact details and immediately asked my Vicar, Ron Pitcher, if the Raiders could come to our parish for a weekend - St Francis of Assisi, Newall Green, Wythenshawe. (A newly consecrated Anglican church by the architect, Sir Basil Spence, with a huge wonderful mural of St Francis with birds behind the altar). Ron's answer was "You do it all and they can come". (Ron is now 94-years-old). I think it may have been October 1964. They arrived in an old van on the Saturday afternoon and played in the parish hall that night and at two church services on the Sunday. We were invited to jive in the aisles but I don't think anyone had the courage to do so. Brother Ronald was also in the parish for the weekend and he, as well as the Liverpool Raiders, was wonderful. I found the article very interesting and it told me a lot about Peter I didn't know. I still have an EP of the Liverpool Raiders. I also bought the 20th Century Folk Mass by Geoffrey Beaumont which I loved, having purchased it in the diocesan shop in Manchester. Canon Patrick Appleford is part of the congregation at Chelmsford Cathedral and is still writing hymns. He wrote a hymn to celebrate his 80th birthday. He has just written a piece in this month's Cathedral News. You can't miss him when he's in Chelmsford as he has very white hair. I look forward to reading the second article. One of my favourite hymns of Peter's,which I can still remember a few lines of today, to the music of Acker Bilk's 'Stranger on the shore' - 'The world God made is darkened by our sin, fear, envy, hate and pride are shared by everyone'. Whenever I hear 'Stranger on the shore' I immediately put Peter's words to the music.
