8. I'm On My Way (To Zion) - World Wide Message Tribe
This song originally appeared on the Tribe's second album 'Dance
Planet' in 1994. One of the great things about working on World Wide
Message Tribe albums was that we'd made the decision to go anywhere at
all musically as long as it was helping create the most effective
possible platform for evangelism. Because of that, it was actually
incredibly inspiring to work on as we never really thought about
trying to find a particular sound or develop in a certain direction.
This song was radically different from most other Tribe tracks at the
time but it totally surprised us by becoming a number one radio song
in the States. I remember Scott Blackwell phoning us up to tell us
this and we had no idea what he was taking about! One amusing and
slightly tragic thing that happened with this song was that Sani (the
lead singer on this track) was singing it in a school's gig one day
and the sound guy had accidentally put the extended remix on. After
about four minutes, Sani realized what had happened and started to ad
lib desperately trying to convince the audience everything was going
swimmingly. After about six minutes the dancers went on to help her
out as she was struggling to keep going. After a couple more minutes,
she came off stage and collapsed in a heap!
9. Do You Know What It's Like - tbc
With V*enna
we'd had a glimpse of what could be achieved by aiming music at the
pre-teen age group and we set up tbc with that very audience in mind.
All the members of tbc were previously in one of the Innervation
schools bands so they were already experienced in ministry work and as
soon as they started gigging together, it was clear it was going to
work. This track was done some way into recording their debut album
and features guitarist Max doing his George Harrison impression to
give it that '60s character.
10. Hypocrite - World Wide Message Tribe
I remember we
had a bit of a struggle getting the 'Heatseeker' album going as we'd
done five albums fairly quickly by this time and it was becoming hard
to keep the momentum flowing. This track came as a real breath of
fresh air as it was so aggressive and different (especially lyrically)
to what we'd done before. Andy had the idea for the topic about
struggling with sin (Romans 7) and I'd been working on this track with
that idea in mind. Then Cam came in and wrote his raps over it.
11. Revival Town (Rapid Auto Abode Mix) -
Delirious?
This was the second remix that appeared on
'Jumping In The House Of God III', again the Delirious? boys sent us a
vocal and we built a remix around it. Once again working with such a
great song it made it very easy to do. Most of the more weird sounds
you hear on this track were made by Dave Woodman doing strange things
to his guitar!
12. Sometimes - V*enna
Mark and I went away for
a few days to focus on getting a few more songs together for V*enna
and this was one of them. I was playing the piano and mumbling the
melody for the first bit of the verse when Mark, who was in the next
room, shouted "key change" which I thought was a bit random. However,
I thought I'd better humour him but when I did a key change, it just
took on a really distinctive character and within a few minutes we
pretty much had the whole thing finished. The UK and US versions of
this song are actually quite different. In the original version, I'd
sampled a bee and slowed it right down until it was a weird rumbling
noise. The US guys didn't like it at all and asked us to take it out
but we sneaked it back in for the UK version!
13. Carry Me Home - Quinton Delport
Quin was about to
leave The Tribe and was wondering what to do next. Mark and I
approached him with a view to seeing if we could work together on
getting something going for him in the States. We did a demo of three
songs, this being one of them. In the end Quin decided to continue
working with his other ex-Tribe mate Jorge Mondera in the UK but we
thought it would be great to see one of these tracks get a release.
14. The Cross - World Wide Message Tribe
In the early
days of the World Wide Message Tribe as we were doing evangelism in
high schools around Manchester, a lot of the music we did was full on
140BPM dance/rave which was massive during the early '90s. As it was
becoming increasingly difficult for Andy (Hawthorne) to speak to the
kids at the end of gigs because they were getting so hyped up, we
wrote this song to use as a bridge into his talks. One of the big
things in rave was to use snippets of classical music, and we carried
that idea through into this slow track by using some of the chords
from Debussy's "Claire De Lune" for a few bars in the middle. In the
end God really seemed to use the song in a big way in that it worked
really well as a challenge to the kids. Andy would often refer to the
lyrics in his talks and we always felt that God liked the fact that
the lyrics were so direct and that they spoke to so many kids about
his death on the cross.
15. Promised Land - Minds Of Men
We'd met the
Midlands producer Kev Edwards from Minds Of Men while working on
another project and we talked about doing something together. They'd
already had this track which was a cover of the old Joe Smooth classic
out on a single so we asked them if they would let us do a remix for
'Jumping III' which they did. The vocal (from Tracey Riggan) was
amazing, full of energy so we just rebuilt a new track around that.
16. The Heart Of Worship - Lucy Britten
Another classic
Matt Redman song, again originally recorded for the 'ReSource' worship
project.
17. tbc megamix - tbc
This was a really interesting thing
to do in a techie kind of way. Lots of mashing up of sounds, changing
keys and tempos trying to make everything fit back together in the
wrong place.
God has used so many of these tracks in so many different ways it has been amazing to see how God can use music as a platform to reach so many people with the Gospel. Music for full on evangelism will remain Movation's brief until the good Lord returns!
