The number of UK drivers attending retraining courses after committing a motoring offence reached a record 1.4 million last year, figures show. Speed awareness courses were by far the most common with 1.2 million attendees, according to the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme. The money police forces receive from each driver who completes these courses jumped from £35 to £45 in September, meaning constabularies collect around £54 million each year.

The government has released data around the Youth Justice System in England and Wales. Youth arrests (between 10 and 17) have decreased by 79 per cent in the last ten years, and the number of first time entrants to the Youth Justice System has dropped by 85 per cent. However, 42 per cent of young people reoffended, which is nearly double the rate of adults.

The number of criminals caught with knives or offensive weapons has hit its highest level for six years, official figures reveal. They show 5,324 knife possession offences resulted in a caution or sentence in England and Wales in the three months from July. The tally is the highest quarterly figure since the equivalent three-month period of 2011, and includes 3,359 offences of possession of an article with a blade or point, 1,708 of possession of an offensive weapon and 257 of threatening with a knife or offensive weapon.

Millions of teenagers live in fear that they will become victims of crime – a fear that is affecting their well-being and mental health, the latest Good Childhood report published by the Children’s Society suggests writes a staff reporter. The report found that one-third of teenage girls fear being stalked by a stranger, and one in four boys worries that they could be assaulted. Two in five of teenagers worries about anti-social behaviour and other crimes, the report found. Close second to the fear of becoming a victim of crime was the million teenagers whose parents were struggling to pay household bills.

The Guardian reports that police in England and Wales are investigating underage ‘sexting’ offences at a rate of 17 per day. The number of cases is rising, with latest figures having increased by a third on the previous year. Police say the youngest children involved were aged 10, with girls more likely to be victims.
