More sex education is linked to higher rates of teenage pregnancy, a new study has shown. It found that teenage pregnancy rates have declined in areas where the government has cut spending on sex education and birth control. The decline was steepest in areas where councils slashed their teenage pregnancy budgets most aggressively. The results follow calls for relationships and sex education to be made compulsory in schools.

Students at a British university have been told they will be marked down in essays unless they use gender-neutral pronouns. Undergraduates in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Hull have been told that if they do not use "gender-sensitive" language, it will have an "impact on their mark". While other universities already advise students to use 'gender-neutral' language, Hull is the first to penalise students for not doing this.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) has passed a motion calling on its members to teach nursery children about same-sex relationships and transsexualism. Delegates at the NUT's annual conference in Cardiff approved the motion. It follows the government's plans to introduce "age appropriate" relationships and sex education in schools.

Young children are to receive 'happiness lessons', including mindfulness, in a new government trial aimed at improving the well-being of the UK's children. They will be taught to think of disturbing thoughts as 'buses', which come and go. It follows results of a study last month which found that the UK's children are among the unhappiest in the world.

A poll of more than 1,000 parents conducted for the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, found that fewer than a third of parents even look at league tables when choosing schools for their children. Instead, more than half (54 per cent) look online for general information, 49 per cent read the latest inspection report, and 53 per cent speak to parents of current pupils.

The number of would-be students applying to university has dropped for just the third time in 15 years. Figures show that around 30,000 fewer people had applied to start degree courses this autumn by January 15 – the main deadline of submitting applications. A breakdown reveals that, in the wake of Brexit, the number of EU students planning to study at a UK university has dropped by around seven per cent.

New research, commissioned by children’s charity Plan International UK, found that 85 per cent of those polled think that sex and relationship education (SRE) should be mandatory in state schools with 82 per cent agreeing that it should also be compulsory at faith schools. The survey, conducted among 2,007 adults, also found that those who received SRE at school, only 27 per cent found the classes informative.

More than 90 per cent of UK universities are restricting free speech, a shocking new report has found. The Free Speech University Ranking (FSUR), by Spiked magazine, states that 21 universities have banned speakers from attending debates or lectures in the last year. Twenty universities have also banned the sale of one or more newspaper on their campuses.

A teacher lost this job in Canadian school for making his pro-life stance known to students, it was reported in January. The teacher explained in a law lesson that in a democracy there is often a difference ‘between people’s private morality and the law’, giving as an example his belief that abortion was wrong but the law was different to his view. One female pupil complained to a school administrator that she felt ‘unsafe’, a claim she also made after he apologised for upsetting her.

9 in 10 UK universities are now restricting free speech in some way, according to a survey by online magazine Spiked. 64% now actively censor speech, and 31% stifle speech through excessive regulation, indicating a steady rise in censorship over the past three years, the report claims.
