Police are putting children at risk by being ‘too cautious’ in revealing information about sex offenders, according to a national children’s charity. The NSPCC says forces are not making ‘full use’ of Sarah’s law – or the child sex offenders disclosure (CSOD) scheme – which allows anyone to formally ask the police if someone with access to a child has a record for child sex offences. But the charity has today said there are ‘vast variations’ in the numbers of police disclosures made in different areas across England and Wales.

The Catholic Church has said it defrocked 55 priests for clerical sex abuse since 2001. The new figures show they were removed from the priesthood after new rules were put in place to protect children and vulnerable adults. The Church said it has received many more complaints about sexual misconduct by members of the clergy.

Last year, 1,027 men in London alone reported that they had suffered sexual offences. Of these, 308 men reported that they had been raped. This number is particularly alarming as experts believe only two to three per cent of men report their rapes. With the increasingly fractured nature of society, rise in family breakdown and the sexualisation of children and young people, there are now likely to be many more young men and boys vulnerable to sexual exploitation.

Police in London covered up an Abort67 poster which depicted the body of an 'unwanted' 24-week-old aborted baby. Officers stood in front of the image which was part of a display near Whitehall, and was placed alongside another picture of a 'wanted' 24-week-old prematurely born baby. This raises the question: if the image of the aborted baby is too 'offensive', why is abortion legal? Ironically, the police officers' actions underline the point that abortion should be unlawful.

A report from the NSPCC has estimated that child abuse ‘cost’ the UK £3.2bn in 2012. This cost comprises of health (including mental health), criminal justice services (including both the offenders and victims who later become involved with criminal activity), social care and loss of productivity to society. This figure remains an estimate as the NSPCC does not know exactly how many children in the UK experience sexual abuse.

Almost 700 complaints of racial abuse have been investigated by Staffordshire Police in the past year. New figures show the force has dealt with 2,669 race crimes since 2011 – with 677 crimes in 2014. The incidents make up more than 80% of all ‘hate crimes’ reported in the County.
