Almost 150 people in Ireland have obtained legal recognition of their self-determined gender in the past year. Since legislation was passed last year, Department of Social Protection figures show that gender recognition certificates have been issued to 149 people. The Irish legislation, which reflects UK law, permits over-18s to identify as the gender of their choice, without validation from a medical professional. It is the fourth country in the world to allow this.

The abortion of babies with cleft or lip palates has nearly tripled in the past five years, official figures show. The condition causes a small or wide gap in the roof of the mouth, upper lip or both. It is usually easily fixed by surgery but it is believed that increased access to pre-natal tests that can diagnose the condition are behind the rise in abortions.
