Even the mega-length artist credit is a stylised tradition. As CR's long-on-the-tooth gospel reviewers will tell you, there are hundreds, possibly thousands, of choir albums released down the years which never rise above mediocrity. So it's great to report that this album is a triumph thanks, not to the handsomely suited bishop who cops the cover pic, but the dynamic combination of three creative elements, firstly a huge choir consisting of 258 voices (and every member listed on the sleeve); secondly, a talented songwriter and producer Kevin Bond; and thirdly, some top of the tree guest soloists including Darwin Hobbs, William Murphy and that mighty-voiced Detroit diva Vanessa Bell Armstrong. Those looking for old school call-and-response traditionalism might wince at the way Bond has put some wickedly funky programmed grooves to the proceedings on songs like "Christ In Me", but less rigid listeners will simply be getting their praise on.
