Perhaps the greatest surprise on this recording is the concerto by Fasch. Who? I hear you cry. Well, I'd not heard of him either, but I liked his work better than the Vivaldi or the Haydn. Apparently he was knocking around Leipzig at the same time Bach was, no doubt walking despondently around with his manuscripts and being told "Yeah, but have you heard the one by Bach...?". If this slightly apocryphal story has any truth, here is a 300 year old "I told you so!". Ketil Christenson delivers the goods with a great deal of style on one of the most unforgiving of instruments. At times he is a little too modern for the music, but that just boils down to whether you like your eggs fried or boiled It's a good collection to have on the shelf.
