With a full blooded gospel choir and a good song like the Andrae Crouch oldie “There’s Nothing Too Hard For Him” the effect of Calvin’s grittily soulful singing is goose-bump inducing. Imagine a singer with a style pitched somewhere between Luther Vandross and Larnelle Harris and you’ll get some idea of the singer’s style. Here producer Scott V Smith brings out the full emotional intensity of Calvin’s great voice and on numbers like “Let Your Kingdom Come” (written by that formidable Nashville trio Scott Krippayne, Steve Siler and Tony Wood) and “The Lamb Who Was Slain” (penned by Scott Smith) the effect is tremendous. This 2001 album shows Calvin to be one of the most underrated vocalists on the whole American scene.
