If you didn't know, the Cedarmont Kids, conceived by Mike & Sue Martin Gay, made a fortune with an endless flood of children's albums. As Cross Rhythms often observed, these albums were dreadful, cheaply produced and did little to help the broader Church other than keeping in circulation a heap of Victorian Sunday school songs many of which had better been assigned to the scrap heap. Finally even the blinkered sensibilities of parents began to awaken to the fact that a mediocre unison children's choir singing "Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam" accompanied by an el cheapo synth backing wasn't going to do much for a young audience raised on chart music, and the Cedarmonts belatedly updated their approach. This, the last album in the series, released in 2007, offers 12 modern worship songs. The backing tracks are a vast improvement though the shrill unison efforts of the 13 kids herded into Beech Creek Studio in Brentwood, Tennessee still have a tendency to grate on the ears. And why parents would want to buy for their kids these versions of "Everlasting God", "We Bow Down", "I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever", etc rather than the originals is anybody's guess.
