Although he has been heard on many broadcasts this is Tom Winpenny's first commercial solo recording. We are confident that it will not be his last. This recital presents a mix of both well and lesser-known organ works by Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924), including the "Fantasia And Toccata In D Minor" and the "Postlude In D Minor" through to the early "Prelude And Fugue In E Minor" and the pastoral idyll "By The Seashore." Winpenny, assistant master of the music at St Albans Cathedral, is playing on the unspoilt 1882 James J Binns organ of Queens' College, University Of Cambridge and very good they sound too. This is released as a download from the solely digital classical label Resonus Classics although you may be able to access it from other on-line retailers if you shop around. The audio quality is first rate and the accompanying sleeve notes (if we are permitted to describe a PDF in this way) are informative and well illustrated. Organ enthusiasts who have the technology to access the release will appreciate it but the general music lover may find it less than inspiring as although Tom Winpenny gives his all in the playing the tunes are, for this reviewer, not particularly memorable.
