Christ Church Worship is the ministry emanating from a church in Hickory, North Carolina who since 2011 have been putting out EPs and albums of their original worship music. This six-song EP was released last year. The standout track is "Eternal Grace" which with a few more production bells and whistles would sit comfortably enough on a Passion album. But there's the rub. Much modern worship emanating from America's larger churches is musically competent, and the Christ Church musicians here do well in building up enveloping soundscapes of rock guitars and synth washes. And they also have a gritty voiced male singer and a lady who emotes powerfully on "Amazing Love". But there's nothing here which comes over as being particularly fresh or original. In such a crowded marketplace, and modern worship recordings have become just that, musical competence is not enough. In truth I couldn't hear a song on 'Christ Church Worship' which could possibly connect with the world church. But who knows, maybe the next release.
